2009: Rock Lotto Begins...

2009 marked the inaugural year of Harrisonburg Rock Lotto: 59 musicians gathered at the Blue Nile on January 8th to draw numbers from a hat assigning them to 12 random bands. Even though as the deadline approached there was much worry and nervousness all 12 bands (some admittedly slightly streamlined) played over the nights of March 6-7. Over $1500 was raised for the music programs of the five Harrisonburg elementary schools (upping their yearly budget by half!) Several bands chose to stick together and play shows after the Lotto, most notably Major T. Payne and The Long Johns who changed their name to Kill Your Brain before recording and releasing an album. Though the audience voted both nights in several categories the records for 2009 seem to have been lost so you'll just have to listen and judge for yourself!
